Celebrating Ten Years of Empowering Change: Harrogate Sanctuary’s Journey in Alcohol Addiction Counselling

In July 2013, The Sober Revolution, a groundbreaking book co-authored by me and Lucy Rocca, shed light on women’s relationships with alcohol and debunked the myths surrounding this socially acceptable yet often destructive habit. The success of the book led us to collaborate on The Six Week Plan, which outlined my cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approach to help women in real-time. Since then, Harrogate Sanctuary has evolved to cater not only to women but also to families, partners, and individuals affected by alcohol addiction. As we mark our ten-year anniversary, I reflect on the journey we’ve taken and the need for tailored care in an era of increasing alcohol consumption.

Despite the progress made, the normalization of excessive drinking persists, with statistics indicating an 18.6% increase in alcohol consumption. Shockingly, 82% of those who are dependent receive no treatment at all. Additionally, alcohol has become 13% more affordable, compounding the problem. While the pandemic played a role in exacerbating these issues, it also paved the way for the rise of online support services and influential figures such as Annie Grace and Club Soda, who have garnered substantial followings. However, the scarcity of specialized services like Harrogate Sanctuary, offering bespoke care rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, remains a concern.

At Harrogate Sanctuary, we recognize that individual experiences with alcohol addiction vary greatly. We offer tailored care to women, families, and partners, understanding the profound impact alcohol dependence can have on their lives. Our clientele extends globally, with satisfied clients often recommending our services to friends and colleagues seeking personalized support. We firmly believe that one must go beyond mere treatment and address the underlying emotional and psychological factors that contribute to addiction.

While the challenges persist, we find solace in the growing sober curious movement and the shift in attitudes, particularly among the younger generation. Many individuals under 35, who may have witnessed parental misuse of alcohol, are embracing healthier lifestyles and opting for reduced alcohol consumption or abstinence. Harrogate Sanctuary takes pride in playing its part, albeit as a “little fish in a small pond,” in empowering positive change.

As part of our ten-year anniversary celebration, Harrogate Sanctuary has collaborated with talented web designers and programmers, including my son Charlie, to launch our new website in July. This platform will enable us to reach out to more individuals who genuinely aspire to transform their lives. Our passion for the work we do remains unwavering, fuelled by the incredible individuals we have encountered throughout the years, none of whom ever woke up one morning and decided to be controlled by alcohol. Watch this space!

The journey of Harrogate Sanctuary over the past decade has been one of dedication, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to providing tailored care for those grappling with alcohol addiction. While challenges persist, we acknowledge the positive shifts in societal attitudes and the growing sober curious movement. As we move forward, we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and our ability to extend our reach, empowering more individuals to embark on the path to wellness.
